Week 4-1

1. Chose five e-zines from other students in this class (see left column) and write a few sentences on each one on what their e-zine is about and critque its format and useability. Of the zines you visit would you return to them for updates..
2. Discuss the use of icons on the net and list ten commonly used ones - plus write a short message using only emoticons (or mostly at least) they are short hand abbreviations used for communicating. I am an 0: )
3. Read the section on hypertext and answer Why Bolter say hypertextual thinking is unnatural because it is an unconscious way of thinking.
4. What is important about the PROJECT XANADU - who started it and what is its link to hypertext Ted nelson created it “The World Wide Web (another imitation of paper) trivializes our original hypertext model with one-way ever-breaking links and no management of version or contents.”
5. Stuart Moulthrop is one of the leaders in hypertext fiction. You will spend about half an hour exploring his site and answer the questions below
• What happens when you refresh the page - what do you think Moulthrop did this for? The picture changes, im not sure maybe he downloaded a different picture and linked it to the refresh button.
• Go to the 'hypertexts' link and click on 'The Color of Television' from the page (not from here) and follow the link-story to the beginning - what was the colour of the sky.....? “the color of television tuned to a dead channel.”
• Follow the story - click on 'color' that you used for the above question - what becomes of the 'levitating TV'? it erases the black so that you see a picture.
• What happens when you click in the TV box and scroll around in the tv? A picture emerges
• Go back a page and click on 'sky' and follow the links and write a paragraph what the story is about The story was really confussing, it talked about the atmosphere.
7. Open Word and write a short story about anything - make several links to your own pages. Go to your Angelfire or Geocities site. It can be as simple as you want or as complex as Moutthrop. Highlight at least four words that will take the reader to the next page and back
It was my 21st birthday, I had gone out the night before when I suddenly woke up to the fire alarm that was going off in my building. I ran outside to see the building next to mine going up in flames. I wasn’t sure what was going on I think I may have still been drunk, but all I could remember was the intense beating of my heart.
8. From 'Influence of the World Wide Web on literature' view the section "MULTIPLICITY"; what are some of the issues facing online hypertextual fiction writing?
There can be too many links with too many endings, that it becomes confusing.
9. Read the section on Identity and ' Identity and Performance in Cyberspace ' and discuss the construction of identity online. Because the stage that we present ourselves in (online) changes, so do the actors (us) that perform online. We are producing a fake identity like if we were acting.

Week 3-4
1. From the section '1.2 Evolution of language from early utterances to chatroom utterances' anwser why it is that 'With technological communication the individual’s identity is not clear'. We have not started on chat room "talk" yet but read the whole section including; 1.2.1 E-mail, discussion forums, 1.2.2 Electronic chat, 1.2.3 IRC, 1.2.4 MUDs and 1.2.5 MUDs vs. IRC to answer this in at least three hundred words.
“With technological communication the individual’s identity is not clear.” This is true because you are not face-to-face you can not see what the person looks like and you cannot read their body language. Online communication is impersonal. Because you are not face-to-face people feel more comfortable lying or exaggerating the truth. You can not tell when a person is angry or joking because you can not hear the tone of their voice. I believe you have to know the person fairly well to be able to communicate effectively on the internet, because it is hard to read people.

2. From the section 1.2.3 IRC - What is IRC? Internet relay chat …the most used online chat sortware

3. From the section 1.2.4 MUDs - what are MUDs? Is a program that allows users to log on and explore texts.

4. From the section 1.3 New paradigm shifts what is the first of the new paradigm shifts discussed?
The first shift was from print to computerization.
5. From the section 1.8 Personal interest in researching online conversation What is this autor's 'Purpose of examining online conversation'? to learn how people behave and communicate on the internet. The author learned chat room etiquette and chat room lingo.

6. Read the section 'CS 1.2 Reader-Response theory' and discuss why the reader is important as part of the chatroom dialogue.

The reader is important because he is the one who is going to interpret what the other person is saying, the sender has no control over how the reader interprets this.
7. Why have I taken an ethnographic approach to researching text-based chatrooms see http://www.geocities.com/picture_poems/thesis/m.htm#_Toc67901739
The author has taken an Ethnographic approach in researching chatrooms by simply observing. If he interfered in the experiment it might have been biased and he wouldn’t have been able to use it towards his study.
8. What are the Unique features of chatrooms? “They are unique communicative strategies with having the communicator be the author and the reader at the same time.”
9. What is ODAM?
Online Discourse Analytic Methods

Week 3-3

1. Read the article on How To Use HTML Meta Tags and explain how the proper words for your page will help you get a higher linking in a search engin
They offer information about your website other than the title page. You get to control how your website is described by some search engines.
2. Go to the META TAGS GENERATOR and fill in the blanks then copy and paste what is provided into the code section of your dreamweaver page (copy over the "title" section)

NYC attractons for a poor girl

3. After doing today's lesson and doing the above number one exercise (adding a title and keywords) submit your zine to search engines. Go to http://www.submitexpress.com/ and also sumbit to Yahoo,
4. How should writing be adjusted for the web to increase its usability?
Write clearly, write for your audience, state facts and back them up.
5. What is Fair use. See Copyright on the Internet by Thomas G. Field, Jr. last viewed 4 June, 2003 online at http://www.fplc.edu/tfield/copynet.htm
Fair use permits the use of others work with out approval. But fairness means crediting someone’s work.
6. Tell what the different sections in this URL represent. http://www.cyberartsweb.org/cpace/theory/pena/index2.html What I want you to see is which part of the URL is the server [the domain name] and etc - you can figure this out by starting with http://www.cyberartsweb.org then adding sections between / and / and tell what each does.
www.cyberartsweb.org is the main page, cpace is the sub directory, theory is the index, pena is the folder, and index2 is the document
7. Read What's wrong with academic writing on the web? Inverting the pyramid and write what is wrong with academic writing on the web?
This article describes writing on some what like writing an article for a news paper, as an inverted pyramid. This means that you start off with a conclusion. Giving the most important information in the first paragraph, this captures the readers attention.

Week 3-1

1. Read the article "GIF vs. JPEG" and describe which would be best for the images on your zine. Also, read Understanding Images Basics to help with your answer.
For my zine it would be best for me to save my images as Jpeg because they are photographs.
2. Is the using of the gif format legal or not? Read the article "The GIF Controversy: A Software Developer's Perspective".
Using the gif format is legal.
3. For your journal (number 8) find one graphic from this site or this site (scroll down to the featured free samples which also has backgrounds: to load a background to your site go to "modify" > "page properties" and after saving the image to your folder either the zine if it is going on that or straight into your public_html folder) and follow the proper legal copyright instructions needed to display your picture or button on your site. You will need to put this gif into the code section of your page.
///C|/Documents%20and%20Settings/student.CETL/My%20Documents/My%20Pictures/snowflak.gif">

4. There are three parts to this. Read Universal Web accessibility Policy (1) and where it reads, " Is your web site accessible?(Use these resources to determine if your web pages meet accessibility guidelines.)" on the checklist read all 14 - I am concerned with number 1 and 14 for now for your zine. Write a sentence or two on whether you have addressed these two points in your zine thus far. (2) Submit your site (this will take you to Welcome to the Bobby Online Free Portal) and write out several of the errors that were found on your page. 3. Go to net mechanic and after getting your result for your zine thus far put your results for question 10b.
I have used simple language on my page but I have not used Alt tags. After visiting bobby it said that I have no alt text for all images and identify the language of your text.

Week 3-2

1. In the article Seven MistakesNewbie Ezine Publishers Make by Sivasubramanian (you will need to pronounce his name for the test - not really) is this article for your type of ezine or for another type - why? Think audience
This is for another type of ezine that is used for marketing and trying to sell products. We aren’t trying to see products, just give information.
2. Even though this ezine is in another language - discuss what it is about and don't just say music - if music - what type do you think it is on about? Discuss the overall layout and colour scheme.
I think this ezine is about current events and the media. It has different pictures on entertainment and celebrities. It shows picture of musicians. I think it is based on rock and hip hop.
3. What is the Importance of Using A Template?
A template allows you to address different issues in your ezine, without making a new ezine for each issue.
4. Find out about e-books and discuss what they are and whether they may replace hardcopy book
ebooks are electronic books places on a screen. I believe they aren’t replacing hardcopy books because people still enjoy the tangibility of hardcopy books.

5. From 'Tips for Developing Content for Your E-Zine' What is 'the secret' of a good ezine that would make sense to use in respect to yours?

A good tip for my ezine would be to focus on one topic, and encourage feedback. If people visit the NYC attractions that I list, it would be good to encourage feedback because it will help other website viewers to determine if they would like to visit there or not.

No, this site does not allow you to use its pictures. You can buy pictures from the website.
1. Read the article 10 Big Myths about copyright explained and list each one and write a sentence or two (do not cut and paste what it says) what it means.

1) "If it doesn't have a copyright notice, it's not copyrighted." You should assume that you should cite every image that is not yours. Most images are copy righted even if it is not stated.
2) "If I don't charge for it, it's not a violation." This is false, it is still a violation if you don’t charge.
3) "If it's posted to Usenet it's in the public domain." Not unless the owners specifically says this.
4) "My posting was just fair use!" the copy right law was created so that you could express your own work, but not somebody elses as yours. Facts can not be copy righted.
5) "If you don't defend your copyright you lose it." -- "Somebody has that name copyrighted!" copywriting isn’t the same as trademarks.
6) "If I make up my own stories, but base them on another work, my new work belongs to me." This is false, if you don’t give credit to where you got your ideas from, it is still plagiarizing. Works based on something is called derivative works.
7) "They can't get me, defendants in court have powerful rights!" copy righting is a civil law, meaning that you wouldn’t do time, but get sued.
8) "Oh, so copyright violation isn't a crime or anything?" Not true, it is a crime. Copy right violations over $2500 is considered a felony.
9) "It doesn't hurt anybody -- in fact it's free advertising." Its up to the author to decide if he wants to advertise or not.
10) "They e-mailed me a copy, so I can post it." All email you get and send is copy righted.
2. What are the main principles of the "copyleft" movement? See http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/copyleft
Copy left allows derivative works to be created. Without accepting the terms of the copy left license are prohibited to creating derivative works. This law also applys to restriction in the public domain.
